Introduction to the Desire Map

A digital exploration of a tool for holistic living

It's time to get off achievement autopilot. You are at the beginning of a transformation…of discovering what your heart is trying to tell you. Your aim is to get out of your head so that you can get into your heart. For an intelligent person like you, I know this is easier said than done.

The exercises below help you get in touch with your feelings. Think of it like soul-stretching or a warm-up to uncovering your deepest desires.

Each exercise includes a worksheet and the questions read by Danielle LaPorte, the author of the Desire Map, who said: "Knowing how you want to feel is the most potent form of clarity you can have. Generating those feelings is the most powerful thing you can do with your life.” 

You can download the worksheets by clicking on the images below.

Brew some tea or pour a glass of wine. Find a quiet corner, grab your favorite pen or pencil and your journal or notebook. I want you to take the time for yourself. Go deep. The questions are designed to warm you up to your inner desires.

Pause after each question.  Write the answers in your personal journal, or print the worksheet and write them down right on the page. Let your mind go and write. You can go with the first answer that comes to mind, change your answers, or jump all over the page. You can give one-word answers or cram in as many thoughts as you can fit.

Or if you are an audio learner, take a deep breath and speak the words out loud. If you want to remember your answers, record them using the voice memo option on your smartphone.

Tip: If you find you’re struggling with not having your answers flow, grab a blank page and just write for a few minutes. Don’t worry about what you’re writing, how it sounds, or how it looks. Just let your stream of consciousness flow.

It’s a tool you can (and will hopefully) use on a regular basis to calm and focus yourself. Designing our lives with intention starts with a feeling—which comes from the heart.

Make a date with your future-self.

This future-self visualization is one that I return to at least once a year. I have found it to be a powerful tool to navigate decisions in my professional and personal life.
 
After the exercise, you'll keep the future you in mind as you make decisions in your day to day life. Your future-self is available whenever you're stressed or worried about a situation in your life. You can lean on her for advice.

In 2015, I realized I'd never taken a course on the most important subject of all — how to design a life that feels good to me. So, I began a self-designed study to find the answer.

That's when I discovered a book that would change my life —The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte.

Now I help intelligent, highly-educated women over 40 who want to be happier in their personal and professional lives. They’re frustrated and confused about how to find the “right” path forward on their own without rules and textbooks. Inspired by The Desire Map, I help them uncover their desires so they can design a life that feels good.
